Many resources are available to help you gain and maintain employment.
- Protection and Advocacy Offices
Protection and Advocacy Systems (P&As) and Client Assistance Programs (CAPs) work at the state level to protect individuals with disabilities by empowering them and advocating on their behalf. You may want to contact a P&A or CAP program if you feel you have been treated unfairly because of your disability.
- National Disability Rights Network is a website that provides information and resources to improve the lives of people with disabilities by guarding against abuse; advocating for basic rights; and ensuring access and accountability in health care, education, employment, housing, transportation, voting, and within the juvenile and criminal justice systems.
- State Protection & Advocacy Systems is a website that helps you find your state Protection and Advocacy System (P&As). P&As work at the state level to protect individuals with disabilities by empowering them and advocating on their behalf.
- Assistive Technology
Assistive technology (AT) is the equipment or products that help people with disabilities learn, live, and work such as: screen readers, vehicle modifications, reading pens, and hearing devices.
- State Assistive Technology Projects is a website that provides information about State AT Projects. These projects are funded under the Technology-related Assistance for Individuals with Disabilities Act and may be able to help you get assistive technology you need to be successful in your job. Find your state AT resource to learn more.
- Center on Technology and Disability is a website designed to increase the capacity of families and providers to advocate for, get, and implement effective assistive and instructional technology (AT/IT) practices, devices, and services.
- Explore AT Center is a clearinghouse for information and resources on many different assistive technologies. You can find useful resources arranged by activity and disability.
- Web Browser Accessibility Features is a webpage that provides you with information about free accessibility features available in popular web browsers to aid you in navigating the web.
- Independent Living
Individuals with disabilities have the right to make choices and control the decisions about their life. These are resources to help learn more about living and engaging in your community.
- National Council on Independent Living is the longest-running national cross-disability, grassroots organization run by and for people with disabilities. NCIL advances independent living and the rights of people with disabilities.
- Administration for Community Living is a website that provides information about independent living services for people with all types of disabilities. Find your local center for independent living and more resources for independent living services.
- Transportation
Transportation is how we get from one place to another. Transportation is important to get to work and appointments on time. Here are several resources that can help you learn about transportation options.
- National Aging and Disability Transportation Center is an organization that promotes the availability and accessibility of transportation options that meet the needs of older adults, people with disabilities, and caregivers. Learn more about transportation options and rights.
- Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP) Transportation Resources is a collection of resources compiled by ODEP to provide transportation access and information to individuals with disabilities.
- United States Department of Transportation Disability Resources is a collection of resources for individuals with disabilities, their family members, and their caretakers on planning for emergencies within transportation systems. Find information related to using transportation systems during emergencies such as natural disasters or terrorist attacks.
- Human Resources and Labor
Individuals with disabilities have rights on the job. These agencies can assist with learning about your rights or help you with filing a complaint if you are treated unfairly due to your disability.
- Job Accommodation Network (JAN) is a website that offers free consulting services for all employees, regardless of the medical condition. Services include one-on-one consultation about all aspects of job accommodations, including the accommodation process, accommodation ideas, product vendors, referral to other resources, and ADA compliance assistance.
- United States Department of Justice Civil Rights Division is a website that provides information about the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and your rights as a person with a disability.
- United States Equal Employment Opportunity Commission is responsible for enforcing federal laws that make it illegal to discriminate against a job applicant or an employee because of the person's race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age (40 or older), disability or genetic information.
- United States Department of Labor Disability Resources is a collection of resources from the Department of Labor (DOL) to give you information about protection laws and your rights as a person with a disability.
- Office of the Assistant Secretary for Administration & Management is an organization that enforces several federal disability nondiscrimination laws, including Title II of the ADA as it applies to the workforce and labor-related practices of state and local governments and other public entities. In addition, this office enforces Sections 504 and 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and laws that apply to recipients of financial assistance under Title I of the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA).
