In July, the nation celebrates the anniversary of the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). This landmark legislation prohibited employment discrimination on the basis of disability and is helping ensure all Americans have equal access to employment.
Youth in Action! – Participating in Internships and Work-Based Experiences, from the National Collaborative on Workforce and Disability (NCWD), presents steps for finding an internship or other work-based learning opportunity and provides youth with tips on how to get the most out of the experience.
An internship is a great way to learn about a profession, explore employment options, develop and foster new networks, explore workplace cultures, and learn if a particular career path is right for you. For youth with disabilities, internships can also be an excellent opportunity to identify and practice useful job accommodations and assistive technologies.
For individuals with disabilities to access and benefit from volunteering, the practice of inclusion is key. This NCWD guide, “Fostering Inclusive Volunteering and Service Learning,” provides information useful to youth service professionals and others interested in facilitating youth engagement in volunteer activities.
Many stories about the criminal justice system focus on race and poverty and not from the lens of people with disabilities. Approximately 750,000 people with disabilities are currently imprisoned or more than 30% of the prison population (500,000 with cognitive impairment, 250,000 with mobility problems and 140,000 people who are blind/vision loss).
Recently a GAO-18-502 report titled “Students with Disabilities: Additional Information from Education Could Help States Provide Pre-Employment Transition Services” noted states indicated the need for “additional assistance with identifying best practices” (p. 26).
