Self-advocacy is the ability to speak-up for yourself about the things that are important to you. Self-advocacy is especially important in the hiring process as well as in the workplace. Here are some resources to help you learn to become a self-advocate.

  • Self-Advocacy Online is a website that provides stories from self-advocates, courses on self-advocacy, and resources to find self-advocacy support groups.
  • Self-Determination is a one-page tip sheet written by self-advocates on the four principles of self-determination.
  • Best Practices in Self Advocacy Skill Building is a website that provides information on what self-advocacy is and why is it important. The website includes fact sheets, toolkits, training materials, resources for youth.
  • Supported Decision Making is a website that provides information on Supported-Decision making. Supported Decision-Making (SDM) is an alternative to guardianship. Supported Decision-Making gives people more independence, more dignity, and more freedom.
  • Self-Advocacy Programs is a website that features a variety of programs sponsored by the Administration of Community Living (ACL) to help individuals with disabilities advocate for themselves.
  • Helen Keller Services Online Learning Tools is a website focusing on resources for individuals who are DeafBlind, their family members, and support network to learn more about self-advocacy, the Americans with Disabilities Act, and other activities that lead to increased independence.
