Abstract Details for Module 15: Independent Living

The Independent Living movement works to provide services to consumers that assist them in maximizing their independence and integration in the community. This includes working towards consumer empowerment, skills training, and environmental modification. The basic philosophy addresses the barriers that society propagates that reduce options for integration, as well as those that the consumer’s condition presents. Rehabilitation counselors can be more effective in serving consumers by understanding Independent Living history, philosophy, and the scope of services that increase independence and integration, which in turn assist in stabilizing a VR consumer in whatever vocational capacity is chosen.
