Abstract Details for Module 10: Conflict Management and Negotiation

Any number of factors can create conflict within the consumer-counselor relationship. The very nature of the rehabilitation counseling relationship contains ample opportunity for conflict, including disagreement regarding the rehabilitation plan, language barriers, cultural differences, psychopathology, and a lack of anger management skills to name a few. Vocational rehabilitation counselors need to understand the basis of conflict, the role of informed choice in creating more opportunity for conflict, pragmatic strategies for preventing conflict, dealing with conflict, and techniques for de-escalating aggressive consumers.
