Abstract Details for Module 9: Counseling Diverse Populations

In order to provide equitable services to people with disabilities and those who are also culturally different, it is imperative that counselors and professionals be prepared to work with diverse populations. Consumers with disabilities who also identify with a minority group often encounter barriers in the pursuit of rehabilitation services and vocational goals. These barriers are created not only by the disability but also by the lack of knowledge on the part of the helping profession to a variety of cultural nuances and issues. The purpose for this module is to increase awareness in addressing the needs of culturally different individuals who are also people with disabilities.
